Has anyone used the XMI 2.1 import capability in ARIS UML Designer 9.7? If yes, what was the source system from which the XMI file was created and was the import sucessfull?
Hi Etienne,
the XMI export features of all commercial UML editors I worked with so far emit extremely dirty XMI files. Many proprietary extensions are written into the XMI file. With some UML editors even proprietary extensions are included if the flag "exclude extensions" is set.
The most cost effective way to "import" a model from a commercial UML editor to another UML editor in general is to redraw the model manually.
The fact open source UML editors like Topcased, Papyrus (Polarsys) or Modelio which are on par, if not even more powerful than the commercial ones emit clean XMI somehow indicates me the dirty XMI is a vendor lock-in mechanism.
