Question around automatic numbering of activities

Good morning,

In our company a number of scripts have been developed to automatically number activities on a model for output in a particular sequence.  These have generally been successful......to a point.  The more complex models still need some manual tweaking based on the logical flow of the models.

Is this as good as it gets, or are there robust, foolproof methods to always number model activities in a desired format.  Note the X-Y coordinate methods don't work for this requirement.
