While my last article explained how to calculate KPIs by means of ARIS scripts (i.e., by macro or report), I will now provide information on how to obtain an exact calculation of the OPE (Overall Process Effectiveness) by using ARIS Business Optimizer.

The OPE rule set is based on the 'Value stream map' start model. In this type of model, EPCs can be assigned to individual process steps, which means that the process steps can be decribed in more detail. The rule set takes account of the following objects and connections:

  • Function
  • Person / Person type / Group / Organizational unit / Position
  • Technical resource
  • IT system
  • 'carries out' connection between Person / Person type / Group / Organizational unit / Positionand Function
  • 'contributes to' connection between Person / Person type / Group / Organizational unit / Positionand Function
  • 'supports' connection between IT system and Function
  • 'is used by / uses' connection between Technical resource and Function

The OPE rule set provides two different views – an overall view and a process catalog.

The overall view shows all KPIs of the process, including irregularities, if any are detected. This view comprises all process steps, as well as the relevant assignments, functions, connections, persons, person types, groups, organizational units, and positions. Thus, it is possible to determine whether the entire process requires optimization, or only individual functions fail to meet the OPE requirements.

The process catalog is restricted to the process steps of a value stream. The OPE is displayed for each single step so that an assessment can be made of whether the relevant process step meets the requirements.

The range of values for the performance, availability, and quality rates is based on the specification of ideal values by Nakajima:

A traffic light representation is used in ARIS Business Optimizer to illustrate which range of values a KPI belongs to. The KPIs (availability/performance/quality rate) based on which the OPE is calculated have their own threshold according to which the traffic light color is chosen.

The rule set not only serves to calculate KPIs, but also provides the option of visualizing these by means of templates. These templates support KPI analysis.

  • Visualization of all individual process steps of a value stream, including their OPE, within various periods of time. This allows the process quality to be compared over a number of different time periods.

  • Visualization of all individual functions of the relevant process steps within various periods of time. This way, changes of the function's OPE can be determined and looked at in more detail.

  • Visualization of all process steps with associated functions, and the values for quality, performance, availability, and OPE. This allows to determine which values have a negative impact on the OPE.

  • Visualization of the functions and their relationships to resources (Person, Person type, Group, Organizational unit, Position, System, General resource). This way it is possible to illustrate the deterioration of OPE values determined for resources.
