Connection Won't Connect

I'm not sure if I love BPM. I just downloaded ARIS Express and I'm having problems with the most simple feature. I'm trying to connect a Gateway to a Data Object. I select the connection option from the mini-toolbar. When I try to connect to an anchor point on the target, I get a small null sign and the connection will not connect to the anchor point.

I can not find any 'help' inside of the help option.

What's going on??!?!?!?!?!

This is not allowed according to the BPMN specification and therefore not supported in the tool. Data objects can only be connected to tasks where they get used.
