ProcessWorld 2010 live bloggingWe are now back to vendor talk, but I think it will be entertaining as Dr. Hess and Mr. Klückmann, who you probably know from ARIS Community, are on stage. Also, the ARIS MashZone video is shown before the presentation.

Dr. Hess takes the first part of the presentation. In the currently crisis, he wonders why companies like Quelle default whereas other like Apple outperform. In his view, this is related to the fact that successful companies follow what Porter already outlined many years ago. They have a strategy they follow. Basically, there are only 3 possible strategy:

  • cost leadership
  • differentiation
  • market segmentation (focus)

He uses Southwest airlines as an example, which only focused on friendly service, speed and frequent departures, but didn't focus on other things like low prices or comfortable seating. With this clear differentiation, they were able to outperform in the past years.

Mr. Jörg Klückmann and Dr. Helge Hess at ProcessWorld 2010 in Berlin

Now, Mr. Klückmann takes over. He shows, that high level KPIs like cashflow, EBIT or turnover can't be used to really improve a company. Instead, those KPIs must be further refined in KPIs you can influence like cycle time, error rate, customer satisfaction, process cost, etc. He compares it to an iceberg, where you only see the top, but there is more below the water line.

Mr. Klückmann provides an account from his working life, where this was not done. In the past, he worked for an eCommerce provider, which provides online shop solutions for large customers. At some point the management of this company decided to also enter the market of medium sized online shops. They asked marketing to generate leads and marketing did so by attending relevant events. However, the overall goal was not further refined. For example, the development department failed to provide a light-weight solution of their software product, which fitted the needs of smaller customers. Also, sales was not informed about the new strategy. In the end, the overall initiative failed and a lot of money was burnt.

He now shows a live demo of ARIS. He starts with a balanced score card, diving in into more detailed levels. He also runs a report generating an analysis of the goal achievement of the example company. He also showed a segment matrix, where key markets and goals for each market are modelled. So this was a short overview how strategy planning and refinement can be done in ARIS.

Now, Dr. Hess takes over again. He will now focus on how to measure goal achievement using ARIS. This is, basically, the opposite of what Mr. Klückmann showed before, because now not a top-down analysis is done, but the actual performance of processes is extracted, measured and benchmarked against the initial goals. He says, process intelligence is done on all three levels and that for each level products are available:

  • strategical (ARIS MashZone)
  • tactical (ARIS PPM)
  • operational level (webMethods Optimize)

Now, Mr. Klückmann takes over again demoing ARIS PPM. Such a live demo is hard to describe. He showcases the different analysis available in ARIS PPM, but also how to aggregate and dive into data. He also shows how ARIS PPM can extract process flows from execution logs. This allows comparing as-is and to-be processes, but also to analyse how a certain process is performed by different organisational units.

Afterwards, he shows a short live demo of ARIS MashZone. Ok, this is probably not new at all for ARIS Community members as we got a very strong ARIS MashZone group here with many examples and discussions. ARIS MashZone allows combining different data sources and visualise them in a single dashboard.

Dr. Hess summarises the talk so far, giving again a short overview of all three products (ARIS MashZone, ARIS PPM and webMethods Optimize). He explains that the main differentiator of ARIS PPM compared to other BI products is the fact that ARIS PPM can extract process models from execution logs. This kind of discovery is also available for material flow or organisational structures.

Dr. Hess announces a new product package allowing extract BI data from Natural and Adabas applications. Something similar will be available for webMethods BPMS. To communicate the idea of business activity monitoring, he uses a car metaphor. Taking a look in the rear mirror is like classical BI, where you analyse past data. Speedometer and other instruments are like a dashboard showing current KPIs. Finally, taking a look ahead at the traffic is like business activity monitoring. Here, queries are continuously performed like other car gets too close. Actions are derived from those queries like breaking in case the car in front gets too close.

Dr. Hess now discusses some of the available out-of-the-box process intelligence solutions. He emphasises that such solutions exist and can be ordered. Some of them are horizontal and can be used in different industries, others are vertical applicable only to a certain industrial domain.

At the end, Mr. Klückmann announces the almost availability of a new book: Process Intelligence for Dummies. The book will be available soon and you can already register today to receive your copy. At the end, he also mentioned that participants of ProcessWorld can get a free professional license of ARIS MashZone.

I think this presentation was a nice overview of what Software AG/IDS Scheer offer in the process intelligence space.
