KM

Greetings -

We are trying to demonstrate the capability to import objects into ARIS. We would like to add the objects (application system types and functions) to an empty model and create the relationships inside of ARIS. The object data is currently in excel format. We've tried to explore process generator options, but have not had much success accomplishing our goal.

Thank you!

Hi Kevin,

You will need to write custom script, for reading the custom format excel and create the type of model you want.

Thanks,

Process generator will only import objects. It will not create relationships or place objects in a model. It also is limited to one object type for each execution of the import.

If you want to do what you describe you will need to explore the "Import data in excel format" report in ARIS. There is also another report that will create the blank spreadsheet for you to work with. It has a very specific format that you need to follow. The help in ARIS for this is pretty good but it will likely take you a few attempts to get what you want. This option is limited (out of the box) to creating new objects each time you run it. There is no ability to update objects, although the script could be extended to do that. It is also possible to use merge to do object updates.

If you want to import objects from an existing excel spreadsheet without doing some work to reformat it you will need a custom script as Amol mentions.

Rick, Amol -

Thanks for the input. I think the ARIS Import Data in Excel Report has us on the right track. I will write back after we try it out. Thanks again.

Cheers,

Kevin

Is there a description of the excel-sheet - how to fill the fields?

The help is pretty good for this topic. It includes an example. The instructions work fine for aone-time use import. If it is something you want to use more than once you need to get the attribute ID instead of using the type number as in the example. The type numbers get reassigned when the server is stopped and restarted.

I want to insert only objects, see example below. What is wrong or does any one have a better example than the help information?

SYMBOL O_TYPE NAME STATUS FULL NAME
Application system type Test1 Ontwikkeling Name 1
Application system type Test2 Productie Name 2
Application system type Test3 Uitgefaseerd Name 3
Application system type Test4 Uitgefaseerd Name 4
