Hi all - see my rant below...
Situation: We are using BPMN 1.x in ARIS instead of EPC because:
- Users are familiar with it
- Several major 3rd parties we are aligned to with use it as standard
- BPMN 2.0 doesn't link to functions items yet (known bug, but means no process hierarchies until fixed)
Problem: Pool objects can be linked to org items, but lanes cannot be linked to anything. In my method, lanes can be Roles/Systems/Locations/Virtual Teams (org)
Question: without moving to EPC, has anyone found a means by which the richer semantic notation of EPC can be achieved using BPMN in ARIS?
Options I am aware of:
1) FAD for every activity on every BPMN map (i.e. add all object types required) - Issue: lots and lots of FADs, FAD name does not update when activity name updates so easy to get out of sync
2) ???
Thoughts and ideas welcomed...hELP ME OBI WAN! (I MEAN ARIS COMMUNITY)
By the way, I personally like EPC, but my business stakeholders don't, so that isn't an option.
ref your option 1 (we use epcs/fads but answer is applicable)
We have a customized solution script we run against all fads on a regular basis that synchronizes the name of the FAD to the name of the function within the FAD. This keeps things aligned as required by our semantic checks. (Our script also synchs the name of the group where the fad is located according to our conventions)
This could be an option
Good luck
Donald
Hi Donald,
That sounds like a good option. Did IDS UK build this for you? I would be keen to progress it.
By comparison, we have a customised script for importing VISIO files and converting to ARIS BPMN 1.x which has been quite successful.
Thanks for the feedback.
