Hi everybody,

when I try to import a vdx-file, ARIS Express shows the message "Mapping Read Error",

I am using Visio 2007 and ARIS Express 7.1.0 425270 (SR 2009_03). Java is 1.6.0_15.

I tried to import Visio Standard-Models that are part of the list of mapped diagramm types, e.g. Organigramm and EPC.

(Yes, I have read the existing discussion about vdx import.

Yes, I have read the online help about the import.)

I am quite sure to have followed the available instructions and to have covered the prerequisites I could find,

Any ideas what could be wrong ?

Uli

Hi Uli,

it would be great, if you could send us the Visio file (please remove confidential content first), so we could have a look on it.

You need to "zip" the vdx. If you edit this article again, you should find "file attachments", where you can add your archive.

Bye,

Frank

Hi Uli,

eventually, we had the time to check it.

There is a bug in Visio, doing an improper setting in the file structure. This seems to depend on the system locale.

We are able to do a workaround and make the file importable. But that would require an update of the Express version we have currently online.

So, if we are going to do an update, this workaround will be online, but for now, this is not planned yet.

With the next Service Release of Express, you can be sure that this will be fixed.

Bye,

Frank

Hi Frank,

thanks for your work and the useful information.

If it is a bug in Visio, would you recommend to look for a Visio-Update or is this bug unknown to Microsoft ?

kind regards

Uli

@ all others: Did anyone successfully import a vdx ? Which Version of Visio did you use then ?

Hi Uli,

I think, searching for a update of Visio won't help. Maybe, it depends on the locale of the system which export format is produced by Visio. I am sure that for Microsoft, this is not a bug but a pseudo-flaw, and they got the workaround for that.

Frank

Hi Frank

I have exactly the same problem with Visio 2003. What is the work around you mention? I need to import multi-page Visio's andf already reduced to single page - doesn't help either. Is there anything I need to delete in the Visio file to make it work?

Cheers

Wolfgang

Hello Wolfgang,

please have a look on that site:

www.ariscommunity.com/users/rvrivera/2009-09-29-what-mappings-are-available-import-models-microsoft-visio

There, our colleague Torsten Haase describes the Visio chart types you need to have.

So, the workaround is: create a Visio 2007 chart having the correct chart type, paste the content from your old model into the new one, save it and import again.

Bye,

Frank
