Hello everybody,
I've some questions regarding the functionality of the upcoming ARIS Express. Please see below:
- Will it be possible to import existing models from ARIS databases (.adb or .xml)?
- Which diagram types are going to be available?
- Will it be possible to modify the models from ARIS Express within different ARIS Products (based on the ARIS Platform 7.1)?
Best regards,
Danilo
ARIS Express is meant for new users, who have never done business process modelling before. Therefore, the essential models needed on a starter level are included like business processes, data diagrams and organisational charts.
It will not be possible to import models from an existing professional ARIS version. The ARIS Express format will neither be adb nor xml, but something different.
I suggest that you wait a little bit longer for the first beta version. It will give you a better feeling what will be possible.
Regards,
Sebastian
Dear Javed,
yes, it will be possible to migrate from ARIS Express to the professional ARIS tools. You will be able to open and edit the models created with ARIS Express. However, it won't be possible the other way around. So you can't export a model in ARIS Business Architect to open it with ARIS Express.
About the second question: Yes, ARIS Express will be a local client instance. There is no database. We target entry users, who have never done modelling before and therefore we think a database is not really necessary and also simplifies the tool handling for an unexperienced user. In addition, installation will be very simple. Basically, you will just have to click a link here in the community to start the tool.

Sebastian
Hi Djebar,
BPMN 2 is not published yet by OMG. Depending on their schedule, we will see what we can do till September. So we have not yet decided if it will be in.
About all the other stuff, the answer is generally no. Of course you can use a process model with the different gateways to express a business rule, but that is probably not what you are looking for. Such advanced features such as versioning and templates are part of our professional offerings and won't go into ARIS Express.

Sebastian
Hi Djebar,
this depends how you define web-based. ARIS is a Java application and therefore it is possible to start it from within a browser. For example, an administrator can set up a HTTP server in your Intranet where you go start ARIS. So the clients don't need local ARIS installations, but just use this server to start ARIS and access a central repository. This is a quite powerful scenario, because you are not limited to the capabilities of a browser, but you also don't need a local installation (besides the Java runtime environment).

Sebastian
Hi Djebar,
the beta test will be done here in the community. Will provide instructions how to report a bug and examples used in about 10 days. Just give us a little bit more time to prepare everything. Make sure to monitor this group for updates. You will get notified by email as soon as the beta test starts.
Cheers,
Sebastian
Hi Meera,
already today you can get a hosted ARIS solution from IDS Scheer. In such a scenario, IDS Scheer is hosting the ARIS server and database server for you and you can access it through your browser. If you are interested in this option, please ask your local IDS Scheer representative to give you an overview about it. However, this has nothing with ARIS Express. ARIS Express is a standalone product, which is free of charge. It is not based on Visio, but instead a real modelling tool, because in contrast to Visio it has embedded the ARIS method.
Cheers,
Sebastian
I saw mention of Blueworks and Lombardi...
Of course there is also Software AG Alignspace, which should be of particular interest given the way the companies are joining forces.
Sebastian, would you be open to having a discussion with us about this?
Thanks,
Miko
Hey everyone,
Do you know when it'll be possible to download and test Aris Express ?
I'm interested in such a tool and i'd like to test it.
I have allready a question for you, will it be possible to access object attributs with Aris Express ?
Which kind of attributs groups will be accessible in comparison with Aris Business Architect ?
Regards,
Pierre PILVEN
Hi Pierre,
please register in the ARIS Express Beta Tester group: you'll receive an eMail with the needed information.
The download for the Beta version is planned for the 27th of this month.
Regarding the attributes:
our intention was to strip down the complexity to a minimum, so yes, there are attributes available, but not much.
Bye,
Frank
Hi Paul,
this thread here is about ARIS Express. In Express, you can not use pools or lanes in the Business Process.
In our tools for professional usage, ARIS Business Architect and ARIS Designer, you've got access to many, many model types, e.g. multiple model types provinding lane handling.
In addition, you can use the transformation framework to transform business process models into BPMN models.
Bye,
Frank
