Hi,
I have just downloaded ARIS Express on my pc, and are now trying to activate it on my PC.
However when i get to step 3 in the activation wizard i get the following error message:
Unable to connect to ARIS community. Please connect to the internet when running ARIS express for the first time so that your login data can be checked. Please also check the proxy settings of your system in the internet options.
I can log in to aris community with my username and passwords, but for some reason it seems like it wont accept the same username and password when logging into ARIS Express.
Anyone knows how to fix this?

Hi,
hte password is not the problem. Express is not able to connect to the community.
Please contact your IT. Express uses the HTTPS protocol to connect to the community. It might be possible that your browser is allowed to connect, but for other applications, it might be forbidden.
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank, IT have had a look on the settings, and they say it all looks good. But still i am not able to connect to Express. Could there be another explanation?
/Danny
Hi,
question: do you use the webstart version or the windows version?
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank,
I use the windows version. I have downloaded it from the aris express section.
I am having the same problem authenticating. I used Process Explorer to watch the network connections; I saw the app connect to a URL at hosteurope.de over https, then immediately close the connection. When I put that address into hit that site with IE I get a message that there’s an error with the certificate.I got a more detailed message using Chrome:
You attempted to reach [original URL], but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as [ARIS community URL]. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of [original URL].
This certificate problem is preventing any further attempts at authentication.
(I tried posting this earlier, but it keeps getting marked as spam. I'm hoping removing the URLs will help.)
Hi,
I might say that this is caused by your network configuration? We've got hundreds of new users per week and they normally register successfully.
Bye,
Frank
Possibly. Since certificate name mis-match is commonly used as a malware attack vector, I would guess that it is being intercepted as a security threat. There is a very large number of people who don't implement any type of security on their network, even if they do know better.
I would think that this should be something that could be easily fixed by having the application skip the redirection URL, and connect directly to the ARIS community site.
Hi Jeremy,
thank your for your information and sorry for the delay.
Maybe we have to check something with our provider...
Can you do us a favor? Your message with the real URLs is marked as spam. Could you sent these URL to contact@ariscommunity.com?
Bye, Frank
I have the same problem with activation wizard: unable to connect to ARIS Community. The IT team says that everything is OK with network configuration
Frank,
Unfortunately, I can't find any of my notes on this one. I ended up taking my laptop home and activating it from my home network, so I'm not able to pull it off of my network monitoring tools either. I can try re-installing to see if I can trigger it again.
I did perform some further investigation here, as well. It seems that the firewall/proxy server at our company is performing SSL Offloading on both inbound and outbound traffic, which most likely causes odd results in a number of different scenarios. I've been trying to get the Security team engaged to see what options are available.
That said, I would still think it would be more beneficial to have the authentication routine connect to ariscommunity.com URL directly instead redirection. I'd say you're more likely to change hosting companies than domain names.
Thanks
-Jeremy
Hi Jeremy,
Thank you very much for this information.
The possibilities in proxy/firewall configuration covers a wide range, which we can't check all in our company. So there exist configuration which makes it hard for Express to do the registration.
Sorry, for any inconveniences. Hope that your security team can install an exceptional behavior for the registration, or hopefully they find another option.
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank,
I'm having the same issue and I'm sure many have had the same issue as well. As this is not an application supported by my organization, IT Security will not assist in resolving this issue nor will they consider introducing changes just to resolve this issue.

Search thread "Activation Wiazard unable to connect" in Aris Express Forum for a trick to circumvent this issue.
Cheers
Thanks for the update. In case anyone else is looking, here is a link to the thread mentioned by Mr. Mpeta-Magenge.
Dear All,
I found a work-around for this problem. Posted here if helps anybody.
Problem: ARIS express needs internet connection for first time opening after installation. For users beyond corporate network, it is likely to give an error - "UNABLE TO CONNECT" even if you provide an userid/password which works fine when you directly login to ARIS community site.
I solved this much earlier for myself by trying the first-time registration through a direct connection, and that was it. But now as some colleagues are trying to do it on desktop, they are not allowed to take the computer outside office for a direct connection.
Solution: An advice in another post here was to use webstart version. It worked for me but not for some other people who were using deskptops. You can try these steps -
1. Install ARIS express as usual using the downloaded installer
2. Connect to site https://www.ariscommunity.com using a browser and download the certificate, I saved it as .cer on the computer
3. Import the site in the keystore within the JRE embedded for ARIS express (JRE folder within the local installation, the default keystore is named cacerts, and use java keytool for importing)
Step 2 & 3, is bit technical; it was easy for me as I had some past experience in how Java works, but might be a notch tougher for non-technical users. But there are plenty of other internet links which explains how you do this. Actually I had to use a HTTP sniffer tool to understand what is going on.
Hope this helps someone save a little of their precious time.

I had same issue where my screen for ARIS express was not going beyond Step 3. I checked all the options and Finally.
I turned off :
1) AVAST DNS
2) AVAST Web Shield and
3) AVAST Fiewall
and then run ARIS Express and it worked.
