Hi!

I´m writing my diploma thesis with Word 2010 and want to embed a Business-Process I visualized with ARIS-Express in my thesis.

Ether way I choose the quality is unsatisfactory. If I use the .pdf-format and put it in a docx the diagram becomes grainy. If I use the .wmf-format and put it in a docx the diagram look ok but the shadows behind the functions and events look strange. If I print it out or export the word-file as pdf it gets even worst.

A workaround for this would be to deactivate the shadows in ARIS-Express but I could not find a way to do so.

Please help me. I´ve really liked ARIS for far but this cloud not be true. After all the work I put in…

Thanks in advance,

Franz

Hello Franz,

have you tried just to copy/paste your ARIS Express model in your Word document?

Hello Nicolas,

yes but in that way the shadows look awful. And an PDF-Save in Word or print via FreePDF XP looks even worst. The connections between the items are not perfect as well.

Can one deactivate the shadows?

Franz

Hi Franz,

I've done it differently. I used a PDF printer in Windows like FreePDF XP to get best results. I printed the diagram as PDF. From here, I could include it almost anywhere. In my case, I most often used LaTeX. If you speak German, read the following write-up how to print almost anything as PDF.

Hello Sebastian,

So you use FreePDF XP instead of the PDF-export of ARIS Express? I´ve tried it and the results aren´t bad. Do you use the default settings in in FreePDF XP or did you change something?

The PDF-Export with ARIS look´s also good but the problem for me is to embed it in Word. After I´ve finished the Word-Document I want to generate a PDF-Version as well…

Regards,

Franz

Hi Franz,

I haven't changed the settings, only the size of the viewpoint so that the generated PDF only includes the model graphic but no whitespace.

However, something might go wrong when you add those PDFs to Word. I haven't done this part as I was not using Word, but instead LaTeX. Take a look at my PhD thesis to see the graphics I created.

PS: The image in your comment is not shown. You need to upload the image and not paste it to the edit field.

Hello Sebastian,

I´ve used LaTeX for numerous (smaller and bigger) documents. It is just talking to much time if one wants to include a lot of (big) pictures and position them properly.

LaTeX is good for specific tasks but not for everything. After a lot of time with LaTeX I really love using Word, not having to compile over and over again. Wysiwyg is just what I want.

But back to my problem. I don´t know if you can see my screenshots now. The first is a direct copy and paste into Word (as proposed by Nicolas) and the second is after PDF-printing via FreePDF XP. Embedding a PDF is not intended by Microssoft for strategic reasons I guess.

I figured out a way that works for me now. Although it uses raster graphics. The png-Export of ARIS Express.

Can one deactivate the shadows in ARIS Express?

Regards,

Franz

Mmmh, I think you will need to turn off the shadows. Select all objects and disable the shadow in the property dialog. It should be possible to do it for all objects in a diagram without needing to select every single object.

Talking about screenshots... why not use a "print screen" in your word document. If it's only a graphic depiction you need.

You only need to crop the image, rescale and compress if necessary.

I just did a test and got very nice resolution even when scaling at 500%.

Thank you so much. Without the shadows it looks much better in Word and the PDF-print from Word via FreePDF XP. I´ve selected the whole Business-Process with ctrl+a an copied it into the Word-document directly.

In my opinion using screenshots isn´t a proper method for large scale diagrams. If you have a 4000x3000 resolution it might be. You can only capture the resolution you´re using. I wonder how you could get a good quality magnify a screenshot by 500%.  The png-export of ARIS Express works.

For both - vector and raster graphics export I had to enlarged the symbols, fonts  and connections in ARIS Express manually because the have a "low resolution"-look in the Word-FreePDF-print otherwise.

Can  somehow change the default-values for font-size an size of the symbols? So I get them in the needed size right after I drag them out of the "symbols"- or "fragments"-menu?

Hi,

in ARIS Express, it is not possible to change default font or object formatting. However, you can format an object as you want it to display and create a fragment for it.
