I work with a CPG company and was wondering what the best practice is for using the Role and Position objects. I do not really understand what the differnce is between them.
I found some diagrams that said a Role carries out a Function and a Position executes a Function. I do not really see a differnce in this and was looking for clarity.
Any help would be appreciated,

Roles describe the organizational element that carries out activities (or uses any other available connection). Positions have multiple roles and are the lowest element in an org chart.
To give an example: you have a role called "buyer" in a procurement process. This role does things like creating POs, etc. This "buyer" role now has to be mapped to existing positions in one or more real org units (and I can imagine that your company has hundreds of org units that buy stuff). However, these org units might be structured differently and you might want to assign that "buyer" role to multiple/different/differently named positions, so that for example you know who will substitute the main position that acts as buyer, when that person is not available. This could be for example the department head (position).
By mapping roles to positions it is highly visible which position (and if you map persons to positions too) has to be granted which permissions in a system or has to be trained.
