How to tailor HTML publishing

Does anyone know where I can find documentation to help me tailor the defaultLayout when using html publishing please. We have done as much as we can with the publishing profile and using an evaluation filter but we would still like to do more to improve the delivery to end users of the published models.

I too would like to change the view that users get when opening an HTML export. I would like to have the Map open with an option to see the Navigation and Attributes not with them open as a default.
